This fly was reared from Tenebionidae beetle in Peru. Seems to be Tachinidae. Is it possible to say more?

It does look like a tachinid but if it came from Peru then there's not much else that can be said The fact that you have a host makes it potentially interesting though so it (and the host) should be donated to a good collection of neotropical tachinids - perhaps the Smithsonian in Washington or Monty Wood's collection in Canada. When Monty's key to Central American Tachinidae is published then we might be able to try keying it but it is no more than a 40% chance that we could get a genus-level identification for it, even then. I have about 800 tachinids collected in Peru by John Smit so I will be working on them in the coming years so I can try ... but no promises Edited by ChrisR on 04-03-2010 12:21 Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |
