Hi,
I live in the UK, nothern part Yorkshire, this was seen and photgraphed in a coniferous clearing and as you can see was feeding on thistle flowers.
Can you identify it? Is it a fly or a bee?

Thank you

Tim

Hi Tim.
It is fly from Tachinidae family, I think genus Tachina.
Looks like Tachina grossa, but it has to have brown calypter, your fly has yellow.
Soon Chris will give you precise answer.

Definitely Tachina grossa Grin

If you can give me the data (date, grid-reference, recorder's name, location name etc) I will add it to our database Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol
