Seen on 2 November in woodland in England. Is it possible to suggest an ID? Many thanks

Looks like a Phryxe sp. to me but (as always) it would be nice to see other angles Smile

Many thanks Chris. For future reference, are there particular features it would be useful to photograph to aid identification of tachinids?

Well, it depends on the genus ... but whichever angle you have then the one we need will be the one you were going for just before it flew off! Wink

Phryxe are a bit anonymous-looking but I'd hope to see erect apical scutellar bristles and if you wanted a species ID then you'd have to show the head from the side and be a bit lucky! Wink When I am trying to photograph tachinids in the field then I try for lots of dorsal and lateral shots - just take loads of photos and fill the card Grin

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
