Seen on 2 November in woodland in England. Is it possible to suggest an ID? Many thanks

Looks like a Phryxe sp. to me but (as always) it would be nice to see other angles

Many thanks Chris. For future reference, are there particular features it would be useful to photograph to aid identification of tachinids? Dave |

Well, it depends on the genus ... but whichever angle you have then the one we need will be the one you were going for just before it flew off! Phryxe are a bit anonymous-looking but I'd hope to see erect apical scutellar bristles and if you wanted a species ID then you'd have to show the head from the side and be a bit lucky! When I am trying to photograph tachinids in the field then I try for lots of dorsal and lateral shots - just take loads of photos and fill the card Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |
