This fly is from a Malaise trap in southern central sOhio (USA) in October. The curious bend of M1 to join R4+5 reminds me of the one Rhinophorid we have in Ohio (Melanophora) but this isn't it. And I'm not sure what family it is. Any ideas?

If I were to guess then I'd say it looks more like a tachinid - flies like Rondania and Graphogaster look similar to this specimen Jim O'Hara in Canada would be able to tell you or if you have the Nearctic Manual of Diptera then you can key it to genus at least

Thanks. That Tachinid chapter form the nearctic Manual (which is out of print) is available for download at: http://www.nadsdiptera.org/Tach/Manual/Manualhom.htm I'll give it a try... |
