Hello to all!
This hairy monster is one of my favourites from my trip to Ecuador. It was about 15-18mm long and rather cooperative. Does anyone know more about it than only Tabanidae?

I can't give you a name but I agree, it is a superb fly Grin I feel it must be at least distantly related to Scotiptera, due to the general size, shape and the way that it holds those huge wings ... but that isn't even an ID guess, just recognition of a similarity. Wink

I was looking forward to seeing some tachinids from your trip - do you have more? Smile

EDIT: I will chat with Jim O'Hara and see if he can think of a name for it - he might also be able to show it to Monty Wood. The larger species of tachinid do often have names but this is still a very complex and highly speciose group ... tachinids are the second biggest Diptera family, by species Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
