Hello to all! This hairy monster is one of my favourites from my trip to Ecuador. It was about 15-18mm long and rather cooperative. Does anyone know more about it than only Tabanidae? 5.8.2009, Ecuador, Quito, Botanical Garden, about 2850m asl Rupert Huber attached the following image: [180.7Kb] Best greetings Rupert |

I can't give you a name but I agree, it is a superb fly I feel it must be at least distantly related to Scotiptera, due to the general size, shape and the way that it holds those huge wings ... but that isn't even an ID guess, just recognition of a similarity. I was looking forward to seeing some tachinids from your trip - do you have more? EDIT: I will chat with Jim O'Hara and see if he can think of a name for it - he might also be able to show it to Monty Wood. The larger species of tachinid do often have names but this is still a very complex and highly speciose group ... tachinids are the second biggest Diptera family, by species Edited by ChrisR on 18-10-2009 10:27 Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |
