Nearly 8mm, October 8, NW England. Sorry only one shot before it flew, and the wings are both out of focus. But it has got hairy eyes, so I think it's Tachinidae.

Hmm, certainly a tachinid ... looks a bit like a Phryxe sp. (hairy eyes, upright apicals on an orange-tipped scutellum, median discals etc.)
