Caught these two in flagrante the other day and it reminded of something Theo mentioned re male pulvilli. In this case clearly much larger on the male; is this a general rule or are there too many exceptions, and why doesn't it appear to be mentioned in the keys I'm using? photographed 24/78/2009; Devon, England Thanks Tim tim worfolk attached the following image: [80.93Kb] |

Certainly looks like Voria to me too I am guessing that the larger pulvilli on males would tend to show up better on live specimens than the dead material that keys are based on, but that might just be a wild guess. It just serves as a handy field-tool when it is less easy to look at parafrontal bristles or ask the flies if they'd mind showing their wobbly bits Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |

Hi Tim It is a general rule with exceptions. I formulated it as a one-way implication IF the pulvilli are clearly elongated, it is a male Theo |
