Red eyes, black with grey body. Pavlov reflex says Sarcophagidae, yet I think it's Tachinidae.

St Claude, French Jura, 20 July. Small gorge with fast running river, mostly forest with some open space. On Hogweed on such open space.

Looks a bit like Sturmia bella (from the tuft of bristles on T4 & T5 and the bare eyes and general appearance), but I am not 100% confident Smile

You had good reason for doubt. The abdominal pattern differs from Sturmia.
Moreover, there are two pairs of reclinate orbital setae, Sturmia always has only one pair.

This is Masicera silvatica, indeed rather 'Sturmiini' in appearance

Ahh, thanks for the correction - I never see Masicera so it's not something I am very familiar with - it did look very dark though for Sturmia Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
