With hairy eyes and strong ocellar bristles? Nope.

I bet it is Phryxe, possibly heraclei. Any chance the apical scutellar bristles are erecit (invisible in the pic) ?

There you go.

Phryxe is a difficult genus, certain ID need genitalia
However, if you take a very good picture dorsally of the abdomen, obliquely from behind, I might take a guess.

Don't know if this is good enough. We have four species to choose in Finland: erythrostoma, magnicornis, nemea and vulgaris Grin

Well, that is exactly what I'd asked for.
Still, can't be 100 % sure, but now it looks like Ph. vulgaris.

The real thing obviously always beats the pictures, even if the picture is excellent as above.
Already without genitalia examined I'd guessed it should be magnicornis, genitalia confirmed this. Now I know it, I can see it in the picture.... (hindsight knowledge)

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
