Hi. Welcome ! Your fly is a Muscidae, a male Stomoxys calcitrans, a biting fly (look at the long sclerotized proboscis) annoying cattle. Stephane. |

finklez wrote: btw, is there a preferred angle for identification? for future photography Welcome to the forum There is no good answer to that question - other than perhaps the more angles, the better Each fly family relies on different characters for identification but if you include close & clear lateral and dorsal shots of the whole fly then you are starting with good fundamentals. Experts will usually ask to see specific characters later - such as wing, leg or head close-ups Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |
