Some help please with this one, taken 1 June 2006 at Etang de la Mer Rouge, in la Brenne, central France. 15mm, very velvety.

Thank you Paul. Now that you have given me a name I have checked some French images on the web and my pic looks exactly the same. I assume H morio is the most common of the species found in France (and it is presumably not H maura as the wing shading is a different pattern).

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
