With this unusual conical head this keys out as the rather uncommon species Neria longiceps. Only recorded from 4 European countries. Size also fits. Any opinions?

Apologies Walter for taking a decade to reply. I've been studying this genus for some time and this is an exceedingly rare species. From what I can see in your images it checks out as Neria longiceps.
I summarise everything I can find out about it at http://micropezid...my/term/25
Key in Roháček, J., & Barták, M. (1990). Micropezidae (Diptera) of Czechoslovakia. Casopis Slezskeho Zemskeho Muzea Opava (A), 39, 97–111.
One to keep a lookout for.
I would appreciate details of its location (Lat/Long perhaps)

Dear Darwyn, many thanks for checking on this! It was collected in Jávorkút, Bükk Mts., Hungary, 17.May.2009 near a small pond in a mountainous region, at the edge of a forest. Exactly here: 48.096567, 20.528174

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
