Hi

Syrphidae well known for the interesting eyes colors and design patterns

I'm looking for references / answers regard:
1. Explanation the functions of this pattern / structure ?
2. Is this pattern having special term in English or Latin?
3. Is this related to UV and Polarizing vision?
4. All other useful info regarding this issue

The Syrphidae in the photo is Phytomia zonata from China

tks
