I'm not sure it's supposed to look like this or if it's sick. The abdomen seems punctured!? Anyway, if it's possible to say anything about the species it would be nice. I guess it might be a Syrphidae sp. From midwest Sweden in may 2006.

Edit: Changed subject (Syrphidae sp?)

Hello!

I would say, that is no Syrphid, but a soldier fly (Stratiomyidae). One of the bigger species, but I leave the details to the experts ;-).

P.S.: The "dots" are pollen grains.

This is a male of Odontomyia microleon. It is a rare Strat and the larvae are not described so far, but they should be aquatic like the larvae of the rest of the genus. Very nice find! The abdominal markings and the black face are characteristic for this species.
Cheers
