… a small picture, but rather unusual blue bottle fly, rather violet with two white spots on the head. Any ID?

It isn't "blue bottle", but a "green one". Lucilia sometimes has such, very strong redish color. Nikita Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University |

These white spots are light in whitish pile. Depending on the lighting you will see the pile or not. Flash might suddenly show them on the photo while you did not see them before.

Marek – the white spots are the occiput, which is white in Lucilia.

Whitish pilose, I presume, not truely white.

Paul Beuk wrote: Whitish pilose, I presume, not truely white. Err...I'll have to go and have a look (we definitely need a blush smiley btw). I assumed pruinescence rather than pilosity, but you are probably right – it doesn't seem to suffer from wear and tear, but I am sure you are right that it is an overlay on the real colour of the occiput itself. It's not one of the key diagnostics, so (ahem) I haven't actually taken much notice – it's the colour of the longer hairs I'm always interested in. Susan |
