On the 1st of July by the edge of a field near Great Brickhill, buckinghamshire, England.

I was thinking Chrysotoxum cautum or maybe verralli.

Nope, not cautum, on the second picture it's clearly visible that antennal segment 3 is shorter than segments 1 and 2 together.
So it's Chrysotoxum verralli indeed, which also fits better it's general shape and color!

Hello Steve,
Yes, i't proves my point.
I took the liberty to work your picture a bit, you see antennal segments 1, 2 and 3.
In cautum 3 should be as long as 1 and 2 together, which clearly isn't the case. 3 is much shorter than 1 and 2 combined.
So it's a female Chrysotoxum verralli!
Greetings

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
