What a strange fly ... related to Cylindromyia, but that petiole is very unusual The artista is very odd too... I have no idea what it could be if it isn't Cylindromyia  |

Thank you guys! when I saw the fly on the photos I instantaneously noticed the strange petiole. If it's not a Cylindromyia what could it be? Now I'm very curious about it. |

Cylindromyia has 2 rather typical features * palpi absent * behind coxae complete chitinised bridge So if it was collected.... Any indication of its size ? Theo |

I can't see palps but they might just be very small - needs putting on a pin (never manipulate a specimen without mounting it first) and then looking at under a microscope. The bridge on the hind coxae is only visible with a ventral angle - and a little posterior too.  |

STOP Look at the arista: it is distinctly broadened towards the tip. That settles it inmediately: Male Cylindromyia pusilla. The 6 mm. supports this. I had guessed it was more like 12 mm. Therefore I did not consider pusilla. Yet another succesful ID with Rui's help Theo |
