I photographed this Tabanus sp. during our holiday in South-France (Languedoc-Roussillon).

Could this be a Tabanus autumnalis?

The abdominal pattern resembles indeed female autumnalis, however, this is a male and other features don't fit: there is a band on the eye, to name one.

Seems to be a male bromius, though the head is rather large.
