I saw this fly in the Aladag mountains, mid south of Turkey. Altitude ca 1600 m, at bottom of steep canyon with small spring (water from melting snow). Sheep and Ibex present 800 meter above. Can this fly be further IDed? Cor Zonneveld attached the following image: [102.65Kb] Thanks for your attention Cor Zonneveld |

This looks like Hypoderma diana. Please post to the gallery. They show the specific features really well.

Thanks, I have posted the photos. In a Dutch forum I saw photographs of a fly also IDed as H. diana - but they looked quite different. Is this a variable species (for instance, the eyes of the Dutch one were not reddisch as here)? Thanks for your attention Cor Zonneveld |

First impression is of Hypoderma diana. However, I agree that they seem different. The apex of the scutellum has some peculiar hairs. This indicates Crivellia, I believe currently considered as subgenus of Hyopoderma. Crivellia larvae live in sheep, so that also fits better. There are 2 species of Crivellia known from Turkey. I have never managed to see the differences (so, in my mind, they could be synonymous). So Hypoderma subg. Crivellia spec. Congratulations ! Theo |

I already posted H. diana pictures a year ago or so. In my opinion this fly is different, and I keyed out my specimens. So I think this might be a different species.

I'm glad I said "looks like" I've no knowledge of Crivellia - so retract my suggestion, and take my hat off to Theo! Please keep the pictures in the gallery (as Crivellia sp.) - they will be really useful. Edited by Tony Irwin on 13-06-2008 20:25 Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |
