These flies were reared from larvae found mining leaves of a Chenopodiaceous plant (a spontaneous weed, species unknown, possibly Beta vulgaris) in October, 2006. Locality: Benitatxell, Alacant, Spain. Near the beach. The size is 7-8 mm

I think it is Pegomya cunicularia Rondani male. The two small patches of setae on sternite V in the underside photo suggest this. As far as I know the larvae of this species feed on various coastal plants such as Atriplex and Beta, and I don''t think on Brassica's |

Thanks to Michael Ackland for the identification. I must confess that I probably made a mistake and it was in fact found in Beta leaves, no Brassica (I made a confussion between Chenopidiaceae and Brassicaceae, sorry). I collected this insect 1 and 1/2 years ago, but I keep pictures of the larvae insside the leaves and, checking them, they look in fact Beta, not Brassica, as can be seen. I remember that it was apparently a cultivated plant (possibly Beta vulgaris) that had grown spontaneously in a small garden. ferran attached the following image:  [81.37Kb] |
