Photographed in my garden on 21/04/08. I can't make up my mind on E.luniger or E.nielseni. E.luniger is very common in gardens, but on the other hand E.nielseni has Lunules with blunt outer ends and is rather dark. Help please! Tony, It does look like nielseni doesn't it, and as far as I can see it has a dark area on the frons (top of head) and what I think is a dark hind femora, both of which would fit. However, this is a tricky genus with many similar-looking species, so unles you can get confirmation from someone else I think you'd need to keep a specimen. If I were you guys, I'd check out Eupeodes lapponicus first (nowadays often called Lapposyrphus lapponicus).  The R4+5 vein looks strongly bend to me! Greetings, Greetings, Gerard Pennards |
