This rather atractive specimen is from the edge of Lake Kerkini northern Greece where it was nectaring at Paliuris spina-christs 24-5-08.

It certainly looks a lot like Prosena siberita, but I have been playing in the gallery and it also looks a like Fischeria bicolour to me, so I await expert adjudication. They are both known from Greece, but neither are on my list, which would mean I am now just two short of the 100 for Tachinids. |

Looks like Prosena, if the proboscis isn't angled - but I am confused by the scale - how big is it? |

I guess, looking at other flies on the same flowers, such as the Parhelophilus in the Syrphid forum, and photos I have here that it is about 7 to 9 mm long in the body. Sorry I didn't catch it. Blamey and Grey-Wilson say the flowers of P. spina-christi are 3 to 4 mm across, but they look a little folded back here.

It's Prosena no doubt, given the habitus and proboscis. Theo |
