Hi,
This fly was a bit small for my camera (a new one with macro lens is ordered!); however, its wing and body colouration recalls Rhagoletis cerasi (Tephritidae). Can it be confused with other similar species?
Seen on 3 May in Berlin.
Regards, Sundew

Yes, it is Rhagoletis cerasi, and certainly not R. berberidis, which it can be confused with - there are silvery vittae on its mesonotum. In fact, there are 2 differen "host races", perhaps species, associated with Lonicera and Prunus. They have no morphological differences.

Many thanks for all explanations, Valery. As we have a lot of Prunus and Lonicera ornamentals around, the little fly will be happy in any case.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
