If somebody can tell me what family this rather distinctive fly comes from i would be grateful, sorry that the photo is not so good.

Nematoceran? Have you been drinking, Jorge? Looks more like Clusiidae (Clusiodes). Edited by Paul Beuk on 06-05-2008 11:29 Paul - - - - Paul Beuk on https://diptera.info |

Dear Jorge, Thanks for the answer but it is not a Mycetophilid, see the antennae in this new photo, now that I have removed a wing. Gordon attached the following image: [49.56Kb] |

no. I was fooled. Paul has reason. Never could be a nematoceran. It is clusiid. |

Thanks Paul, I have now been to the Clusiidae gallery and it looks closest to Hendelia beckeri, Jorge I will try for a better frontal photo later, I only got the camera today and haven't read the manual yet. |

OK, the first two photos were using the SuperMacro Mode, these two are taken down the microscope, with practice I am sure I will get better.

Yes, the very bottom photo is a clusiid, but the top photos are not! This is a species of Chyliza (Psilidae)! Cheers, Steve |

Yeah, except that you have no comments. [Sigh.] I think you are just upping your posts count.

errare humanum est. (hence, my "no comments") And remember this from Roosevelt: "The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything." ah... and I don't care about numbers as you intended. Edited by jorgemotalmeida on 07-05-2008 02:23 |

Andre wrote: MY GOD! You removed a wing for Jorge?! Why not, it was not my wing and the fly was already dead, and I have several others from the same sample. I would do as much for you Andre. My thanks to Steve for helping sort this one out, perhaps Andrew will put it to species for me. Gordon |
