Hello Forum,

this one surely belongs to the Tipulidae. But I don't know further. Maybe it is T. paludosa or T. oleracea or....

Is Tipula spec. correct? Is a closer ID possible?

Data: Hagen (NRW, Germany), artificial alder marshlands, 175 m above sea level, May 4th 2008

Best regards, Josef

This female crane fly does look like Tipula paludosa superfacially, but I believe it belongs to species in the genus Tricyphona of the family Pediciidae. Compare the wing venation to a Tipula species you will see the differences. Here are some images of the North American species of Tricyphona species for your infomation. My suggestion on Tricyphona based on the shorter size of the antennae and the slightly marked wings of your image, but the sure character which could not be seen on your image is the hairy eyes.
