Does anyone here know about snails? I found this one in my garden in southern England today (23/4/2008). It is 1cm across and roughly fits Hygromia limbata but I don't know snails well enough to be sure. When Kerney & Cameron was written it was only known from scattered colonies in southern England (Wiltshire & Devon) but I wonder if it has spread?

Hello Chris,

Hygromia alright, but I'd vote for H. cinctella, a mediterranean species that has been spreading very successfully over Western Europe during the last fifteen years or so.

cheers - martin

Thansk for that - I guessed cinctella first but then changed my mind! Smile I just had word back from Steve Gregory in Oxford and he agreed with H.cinctella and he has recorded it in Oxford and another town close to me.

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
