This couple was on the sand along a brackish water pond in Camargue, France (La Capeli?re), on April 2nd 2008. There were many more but it was hard coming within photographing distance. Approx 8 mm. Dolichopodidae, perhaps ? Thanks for your help Philippe PS Flamingos were all over the place there.... Certainly this qualifies to a Dolichopodidae. |

Not 100% certain, but this looks very like Hydrophorus - see http://www.dipter...to_id=1298

Thanks Jorge and Tony; I had spotted Hydrophorus in the gallery too, because of the habitat and the rather long wings for a dolichopodidae. But as the example there is from Senegal and I have no clue whether the genus is present or not in Europe, I did not even suggest it... ??? Philippe |

Hydrophorus has many species in Europe incl. France. See Parent (1938) - free e-access and http://www.diptera.info/downloads.php?cat_id=8&download_id=93 Igor Grichanov |

Thanks Igor. Impressive work. It seems indeed hopeless to come to an ID from a single picture, considering the number of species.. At least, would you agree it is a Hydrophorus ? Philippe |
