Hi, any idea what this large 25mm long Asilidae from Antalya, Turkey might be ? Even the genus would satisfy me.

Should be close to Dysmachus... but Turkey.. better wait for a real pro on this family Smile. Are you sure it's 25mm?

Hi,

doesn't look to me like a Dysmachus. In Dysmachus the last tergites are incorporated in the ovipositor and not free as in the depicted specimen. Furthermore the dorsocentrals an the mesonotum usually reach further to the front. Here they are restricted the back part of the mesonotum.

Why not a specimen of the very species-rich Machimus-group?

Greetings, Danny Wolff

Hi, thank You so far. The length is in fact 26mm ! Is there any details that could help the identification? I can take and send more pictures if they will help.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
