Hello,

I photographed this fly on Monte Pettino (AQ), Italy, 1000m a.s.l. on April 29th 2023. It looks like a Rhinophoridae to me, but I'm not completely sure. Is it possible to identify its genus or species just from this photo? Unfortunately it flew away before I could take other pictures.

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

That is actually a Tachinidae in the Wagneriini-tribe. I need to check the literature.

By the way, do you live in the l’Aquila region ?
we visited it this spring, we missed you by only a few km.

Thank you for the correction. Just yesterday I was double-checking this individual and came to the conclusion that it was more likely a Tachinidae, and to my untrained eye looked like Wagneria or Rondania, so this is a nice confirmation.

By the way, do you live in the l’Aquila region ?

Yes, I live a few kilometres away from L'Aquila, if you happen to come again in the region let me know. Which places did you visit in the area?

Rondania ? I think you mean Ramonda, since Rondania is totally different.

This seems to be a Wagneria, it might be W. gagatea but based on this one picture, I cannot be sure.

Thank you! Yes, of course I meant Ramonda, I tend to mix up the two names.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
