Hello,

In 01/09/2023, my coleague collected 6 Sciapus specimens (1 male and 5 females) from Posidonia debris in a beach of the Greek island of Lesvos. I tried to identify them using both Grichanov's 2007 work on East Mediterranean taxa and Grichanov & Negrobov's 2014 revision, but with no clear result. I mostly keyed out around S. basilicus in both works, for both sexes, but I don't think that it is correct. Below, I provide photos of various diagnostic characters (male and female habitus, fore tarsus of the male, genitalia, pruinosity of the thorax and frons, etc). Unfortunately, the specimens are in quite a bad condition now (they shrivelled/dehydrated quickly after taking them out of ethanol), but I can take more photos if needed.

What do you believe?

Thanks!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
