Hi,

Without a proper close up of the posterior part of the head it will be very difficult I think. So far it looks like there are no black bristles, if so it can be one of the following species I guess: Bombylius cinerascens, B. minor or B. posticus.

With yellow tibiae it could be, with a big question mark, B. minor?

I'm no Bombyliidae expert, let alone someone that know the French species, best to contact a French expert I reckon.

Best, Jonne

Hi,
I try agan with van Veen key see and new photo belove :
3.b Wing hyaline or with a diffusely marked front border -> 5
5.b. Body yellowish haired; abdomen without silverish hair patches -> 6
6.a Head seen in front: along the hind border of the eye a row of black hairs on the head, contrasting with the yellow hairs -> 7
7.b Thoracic dorsum, just before the implant of each wing, with 2-3 yellow bristles (may be hard to see amongst the yellow hairs); head of the halter whitish. 7.5-11mm. -> Bombylius canescens Mikan, 1796

What do you think of that ?

Best whishes.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
