A slight quandry with these, unsurprisingly maybe.
I have male and female specimens, swept from wetlands in Northern Mallorca, the females key easily to M. claripennis in Negrobov's 2000 key.
The males are being more problematic but that could be my understanding of couplet 7 which if these were M. claripennis would be ' fore femora with 5-10 ventral long pale hairs'
I have attached images of the legs and genitalia of one of the males, I don't have any resource to check these against as the sources I have do not illustrate M. claripennis.
To confuse things a little, to me, the genitalia look very close to the illustration of M. albipes in Grichanov et al 2007, the specimens don't key to this though.
I realise that Micromorphus can be problematic but any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm runnning out of ideas!

Dear Dave, I think your study confirms that Micromorphus claripennis is a variation of Micromorphus albipes (as Parent and Stackelberg thought). Negrobov raised it to species level based on colour characters without explanation. The colour does not work for Micromorphus. Remarkably, Negrobov included in his key doubtful "Micromorphus" paludosus, which belongs probably to Medetera or Rhaphium.

Dear Igor,
Thanks for responding, so this should be determined as M. albipes?

M. albipes var. claripennis is common in Morocco. I consider it M. albipes.

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
