Hello, found in Hungary, 2023.May.
One of the Cheilosia-species, with:
- completely black legs
- completely bare eyes
I excluded Cheilosia nigripes, because it’s facial tubercle’s upper margin is absolutely not like this. There are two species left: vicina and antiqua. I can’t understand the difference in my key, so I don’t know which one is this. I would rather say antiqua, because vicina has more protruding facial tubercle, and the facial tubercle in this specimen is more similar to antiqua’s facial tubercle. But I’m absolutely not sure in this, could you help me please? What do you think? Is this a vicina or an antiqua?

The description for vicina in Bot & Me
utter (as well as I can pich up the Dutch text) says short light and dark hairing and long black hairs on the upside of the thorax, and a large facial knob. Lenght 6-8 mms. So, perhaps vicina?

Hello! Thank you! I have got a description in Syrphid forum in Facebook, and about that one this is rather antiqua. And, the facial knob is a bit larger, and not as protruding as in vicina. But I don’t really know, this is a really hard species-pair..

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
