Hello! I caught yesterday this fly in Hungary. I tried to key out, and I got Onesia. There’s Onesia sepulchralis, what can be excluded because the ia bristle before the suture. (I marked it with red in the 3. picture). I could exclude zumpti as well, because hairs on cheeks. Then, this just could be two species: austriaca and kowarzi. I read, that they can be distinguished by the face in side view. My key writes, that: “the forehead is forward one third of the width of the eyes” in kowarzi, and half in austriaca. About this, I would say, that this is austriaca. I marked it with red in the fourth picture, is that what the key says? Or did I mark something else? Could you help me please? Which species is this?

External features are highly unreliable, in my experience, in Onesia.
Simply check the genitalia.

Thank you! And how can I see the genitalia? Do I have to pull it with something from the abdomen? Or how? Could you please explain it to me? I haven’t checked genitalia so many times, and in general, I can’t find it.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
