Hello everyone

I found this hoverfly yesterday in the Black Forest (southwest Germany) on the edge of a forest path (fir, beech). The size was about 10 mm. It is probably a male of the genus Cheilosia. Can you identify the species?

Greetings Siggi

Hello Siggi, with van Veen's key in Hoverflies of Northwest Europe I ended up with canicularis group and male C. himantopa ("tergites with copper sheen, last segment of tarsae often dark") But I fear, it's not enough to be quite sure and it'll be better to wait for the expert.

Hello Eric,
thanks a lot for your help. That looks very appropriate to me, but unfortunately I only have this one picture. Then I'll wait a little longer. If no one answers, the picture gets the name Cheilosia cf. himantopus.

Greetings Siggi

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
