Hi All, I am working on a project identifying flies from photos, and i am unsure about separating these families. I think the only reliable way is with the wing veins, for which I am using the attached identification diagrams. I just wanted to ask your opinions, firstly if you think these vein diagrams are reliable, and secondly if you would also identify this to Muscidae family based on the shorter cu-vein appendix? many thanks everyone!! There is some overlap in wing veins and you have to look at other characters. Shiny green muscoid flies with strong bend in vein M, without faint stripes on the thorax or strong bristles on the abdomen, should be Lucilia or Neomyia. Species of Lucilia have 3 pairs of postsutural dorsocentrals and 2 or 3 pairs of postsutural acrostichals. Species of Neomyia have 3 or 4 pairs of postsutural dorsocentrals and 1 pair of postsutural acrostichals. The common species N. cornicina has the green color extending onto the head and is only likely to be seen near bovine dung. Edited by John Carr on 16-11-2022 18:47 |

The parafrontals are green on Neomyia, never so in Lucilia. I think John was making this point as well ? This would be a clear candidate Lucilia to me, but pics not razorsharp so some margin for eroor. Theo Edited by Zeegers on 16-11-2022 19:34 |
