Good evening,

here are two pictures of Syrphidae from today. I suspect that they are of the genus Paragus, but so far I have not been able to identify the species. Body length < 6 mm. Habitat sandy dry grassland in southwest Germany.

Thank you for your help.

Paragus is ok, and it is one without hair bands on the eyes. Van Veen's key (https://web.archi...s_key.html) lists three candidates: P. haemorrhous, P. tibialis, and P. constrictus. Only males can be identified (by genital characteristics), and yours is a female. Falk (https://www.flick...710183030/) says P. haemorrhous is common and found in sunny grassland, so label your pictures "cf. haemorrhous" - it's the best we can say...

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
