I believe this to be a Hyadina sp. but I can't figure out the species.
Is anyone more familiar with Ephydridae willing to shine a light on this?

On balance I would say Hyadina guttata (should have clear patches either side of the posterior cross-vein, yellow palps, and two round dust-spots on the occiput)

Thanks, Tony.
I just had another look and I can indeed see two clear patches on both sides of the posterior cross-vein. I had misread the key and was expecting it to look differently!
Two round grey-dusted spots on the occiput too. I'll put this one down as Hyadina guttata.

Does somebody know how valuable is the following feature, which is mentioned in Stuke (2010):

* face golden dusted... Hyadina guttata (Fallen, 1813)
* face silver dusted.. Hyadina humeralis auct., nec. Becker, 1896

Personally, I would say the face in these pictures is silver dusted (favouring humeralis), but that would contradict the clear patches (favouring guttata).
Best wishes, Niels-Jan Dek

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
