I was lucky enough to spot the mother of all Tabanids, a Therioplectes sp. Only gigas is known form Hungary, but the description of this species in Fauna Hungariae did not entirely convince me that it could not be another species. Especially the furring of the abdomen does not seem to fit perfectly. A lot more images can be found here: https://www.izeltlabuak.hu/talalat/193884 A nice addition to my garden list. However, this looks quite identical to the photos present for gigas in the gallery.

I did the 'world review' of the genus in 2005 (Studia Dipterologica) and indeed gigas is the only species known from Hungary in the current sense. Moreover, features confirm it is gigas indeed. Still, a nice find ! Theo |
