Germany, Saarland, Bexbach, Garden on Mentha, Absolute Altitude 250 m, 10.08.2025
Based on the pictures on this page, it should be this species. https://www.bioimages.org.uk/html/Conops_ceriaeformis.htm

In the Conopidae key which I use, you only get to C. ceriaeformis if the frons is black. Your fly is at least partly yellow on the head, which might key to Conops strigatus. As I don't know either species, I would advise waiting on an expert opinion.

Hello James,

You are probably right about Conops strigatus. Conops ceriaeformis has a black forehead, but Conops strigatus has a lighter, more brownish forehead. See also here https://determineren.nederlandsesoorten.nl/linnaeus_ng/app/views/matrixkey/index.php?epi=31

Does anyone else have an opinion about this species?

It looks like Conops ceriaeformis (female) to me.

Hi piros,

I now believe that too. The tip of the abdomen clearly matches C. ceriaeformis. The coloration of the forehead made me unsure, but in newly hatched specimens it is not yet completely dark.

Best regards, Volker
