Hi, this handsome little male tangles me since 2019-07-14 in Ansbach, near Frankenhoehe Nature Park, wasteland. Belshaw and tachinidae.eu leads me to Carcelia: - eye pubescent - ve bristles present and well developed - gena approximately 1/10 of eye height - pedicel black - first flagellomere between 4.0 - max. 6.0 times length of pedicel - 3 + 4 dc - tergites 3 and 4 with median discal setae Is Carcelia correct or did I stare at the fly too long? eklans attached the following image: [146.64Kb] Edited by eklans on 18-12-2021 15:13 |

Traditional keys are not very useful for these kinds of pics. The height of gena is very difficult to estimate from these angles, but it is too high for Carcelia. All European Carcelia have *largely (or completely) red tibiae * largely rec scutellum Two easy reasons why this can’t be Carcelia. |

I see two pairs of discals on each tergite, 5 dark vittae on thorax and only one strong oi on frons: Eumea. Theo |

Thank you very much Theo! That's why I could not find a Carcelia species for so long!

3rd antennal segment > 4 times 2nd, convex facial ridge, face longer than frons: male linearicornis?

Probably. Length of antenna supports linearicornis. Normally, those males have a slight hind of yellow on the tergites, which I don’t get here. Theo |

Thanks, Theo. Here's an uncompressed snippet showing a slight hind of yellow on the tergites?
