Yes, the wing pattern best matches T. neesii in my copy of "Tephritid Flies Diptera: Tephritidae" by I. M White (but that book only covers Britain).

I recently came across T. neesii here, on ox-eye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare). With theTephritidae especially, knowing the plant they were on can be very useful in identifying them.

Many thanks to you both. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the plant it was on. It was on sand dunes , had very thick leaves and had no flowers.

All the examples of T. neesii in the gallery have brown eyes, whereas this had green eyes. The "yellow" in my images is, I presume, a result of the use of flash.
I have tried to google "Thephritis near simplex" without success. Any idea why ?
Many thanks and regards.

Dear malvizz,
Color of eye is not a key character in identification of this species.
Wing pattern is the most important character: Anal part of wing is reticulated and it is not T. neesii. It is not T. simplex because rays in apical fork is thicker in T. simplex.
Suggestion: Wait for Valery, He can help us. Smile

Nope guys, it is not a Tephritis at all.
The fly is Euarestella megacephala Lw., the type species of that highly diverse genus. Note TWO scutellar setae!

Albert, please submit your pictures to the gallery!

Thank you very much Valery.
How do I go about submitting the images to the gallery ? Are there any instructions on this site ?
Do they have to be a certain size ?
Regards
Albert

Click + in Gallery Links menu at the left and open it to see "Submit Photo For Gallery". I believe the rules are the same as here.
