 Tipula (Acutipula) sp. (possibly fulvipennis?), northern Norway

Another Tipulidae, photographed 23.06.2011, coastal area (forest). Length approx. 20 mm. Guessing at Tipula (subgenus Lunatipula)? Maybe not possible to ID to species, too difficult to photograph all details outdoors on live specimens...

This very much looks like Tipula (Acutipula) luna Westhoff, 1879, a species NOT known from Norway. Do you have more pictures? Would be great. Pjotr |

No, that's all pictures I have... What details are missing? Will have to wait till next year to find more of these. Could I expect it to be found close to the coast in forest or in inland/mountain areas too? It's listet in a Norwegian database for species registering as Tipula luna (I'm also reporting insect-species for my area...). How sure are you that it's T. luna? |

Added photo of abdome, it lacks dark patterning, could this vary in this species? Compared to other photos of T. luna.

I asked Jukka Salmela to have a look and he suggested Tipula (Acutipula) fulvipennis De Geer, 1776. I think he is right given the small spot in the middle of the wing and the broad outer dististyles. The grey colouration of your specimen is much more like T. (A.) luna, whereas T. (A.) fulvipennis is a brown species. Search for photo's of both species on the web and see what I mean. Sorry for putting you on the apparently wrong T. (A.) luna leg. |

T. fulvipennis looks very similar, except all I found photos of have brownish abdomen (this site have photos: http://www.commanster.eu/commanster/Insects/Flies/SuFlies/Tipula.fulvipennis.html) Have used slightly too much flash on these photos, makes patterns and colour harder to see. Wings matches fulvipennis, not T. luna, I think. T. (Acutipula) cf. fulvipennis will be ok? |

Jo, det må nok være fulvipennis, selv om fargen er litt rar! Another difference is that fulvipennis is a very large cranefly, whereas luna is of average size. |
