Pictures taken near Szeged, S. Hungary, on 04.05.2012. I think it a a male of Stratiomys singularior. Is this correct?
Thanks for any comments in advance!

I realized now that the eyes are hairy! Would that make this a male of S. longicornis?

S. longicornis is rather bee-like and has no white markings at the abdomen (see http://diptera.in...pid=148863).
The gallery photo of the S. singularior male (http://www.dipter...to_id=1531) shows hairy eyes, too. So why not this species? I am no expert, however...

Thanks a lot for your answer! Of course, S. singularior was my candidate too, but I've read somewhere (I don't remember whereFrown) that southern populations of S. longicornis may have whitish spots on abdomen, that's why I've become hesitant...
Best regards,
Henrik

P. S.: Would you also be able to have a look at this fly:

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
