Hi

* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.04.29
* size - 6 mm (medium fly)
* habitat - woodland (many ferns (some small trees..), Fagus spp., Pinus spp., Acacia sp., Urtica sp., and others)
* substrate - Caught with entomological net, but this fly was above moss.

Caught the fly in a shadow zone, and near a river. The trees reaching about 5 m.

Never seen a so green fly like this one.

I think this is chironomid fly.

EDIT --> Title changed from "Green Chironomidae" to "green Chironomidae - Stenochironomus gibbus". There was a slight doubt about gibbus so the title turns now: "green Chironomidae - Stenochironomus cf. gibbus"

Could it be chaoborid fly?

the first pair of legs seems to be very large antenas.. awkward
the wing is very hairy. (posterior margin)

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
