Is this a female Dinera ferina or am I completely on the wrong track? From 28 August 2022, banks of the Loire River near Blois (central lowland France). Specimen is 12mm.

I think this fly belongs to the subfamily Exoristinae.

Typical characters of tribe Dexiini (not present in all genera) are

* plumose arista (this looks bare)
* divergent lateral scutellar bristles and strong crossed apical bristles (nearly parallel here)
* bend in vein M either obtuse or close to wing margin (right angled and far from wing margin here)

Also look at the part of the head below the eye.

John is right, it is a very nice Spallanzania hebes, soon to be reported as new to NL and hence definitely to be expevted around the Loire.

Thank you so much! It's a nice record for us too, and the site it came from is being surveyed with the idea of getting it declared a Zone Naturelle d'Intéret Ecologique Faunistique et Floristique.
