this copula i photograph 2 1/2 years ago in late autumn, again near d?sseldorf/germany. in my website these flys are specified as 'Scatophaga stercoraria'. Again my website-partner does not agree with this identification and wants to check it up, me too.

i am sure we will find help! Smile

best regards,
maik

This is Scathophaga, but not S.stercoraria - antennae yellow.
May be Scathophaga lutaria, may be not...

I don't think it's lutaria either, but I don't have time to check my references just now to see if I can work out what it is.

My key leads me to inquinata.

Then probably the note I made in my key that characters were reversed (made it ages ago, so cannot exactly recall why) is correct. Grin

As far as I understand S.lutaria and S.inquinata distinguish from photo mostly by jizz and comparing with collected material...

It was the lack of the dark strip on the top of the front femur that made me think not lutaria. Inquinata was my next thought, but I know they are really similar and require head stratching.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
