HI,

This animal was dead, I'm not sure of the size but it wasn't big. Looks like Anisopodidae to me. Smile If so, is it possible to know which one? Thanks! Janet

On 15th July, Lincoln UK.

3 pics.

Limoniidae. Has some likeness to this Rhipidia maculata, but the markings in the Gallery images are paler. That may be due to age, though.

Thanks Paul, it does look like that. The lighting is difficult on these, I now have Vista and upgraded the Photo programme (free) which gives the ability to alter light in subtle ways, better to show detail!

Is the ID for Rhipidia maculata firm enough to upload to the gallery?

I have a few of these and some still around, I got a pair in copulation on 5th August which look similar but I'm not certain of the wing markings. I've tried to upload the pic but it won't go! Angry

I am by no means certain that the ID for your photo is correct. I don't know if there might be species or even genera with similar markings.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
