Could anyone help with this female Platycheirus? It may just be a rather small and narrow P. albimanus, but it has a face that is shining above the facial knob, not dusted as in P. albimanus. It appears to have square/elongate tergites 2-4, although in fact they are all slightly wider than long. The hairs on sternite 2 are shorter and less dense than on typical P. albimanus. However Bartsch states that the female's legs should be mainly yellowish and this specimen has largely dark hind legs. Does anyone have reference material they could check and advise please? The two images show P. albimanus top and the unknown specimen below (the lower images are slightly magnified in comparison to the the top images, so the bottom fly is distinctly smaller than typical P. albimanus)

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
