This tachinid was moving its wings a lot while running on the ground. What species may it be? location: Barcelos, Portugal date: 16/03/2008

Correct. This one we can actually get to genus level: Periscepsia should be carbonaria, (only species in Spain, isn't it ?) Theo |

For Spain it has P. carbonaria (Panzer, 1798) and P. handlirschi. For Portugal only P. carbonaria. |

Yes, I had my doubts and now I can see it: the first antennal segment is much too long for carbonaria. SO this is P. handlirschi. Handlirschi occurs more inland in mountains, whereas carbonaria occurs more at sandy shores. Does that make sense ? Theo |

Theo not much... barcelos is not so far from beach: http://maps.googl...8&t=h&z=10 about 15 km. And it doesn't have real mountains around. Only hills. It is nearly flat with some hills around. |

Well, Barcelos isn't really mountainous. I'm not sure if this is important, but the vegetation on the place is tipical of the one found in mountains (Ulex spp., Calluna sp., Cytisus sp., etc). |
